Plan “B”
Accidents do happen!
“Plan B” is extra insurance
against technology surprises, such as, outages, laptop batteries running out,
websites that disappear from the internet.
Here are some “Plan B”
strategies to implement so you will not be tragically surprised!
*For website display trouble, hit the Refresh key to reload the page.
*if
this doesn’t work, hack down the URL to the extension (.com/.org/etc...) and
navigate through page links to get to the page you
want.
*if this does not work,
close the browser and reopen, access the website again.
*Prepare for an internet outage by saving webpages in offline,
archived format:
*In Internet Explorer, Chose “File Menu” then “Save As” then, “Single
File
Webpage” (in the middle of
the window). Make sure you know the location
of your saved file. (I usually create a
folder called “Offline” and save archived
websites to “My Desktop” first, then move the
page to this “Offline” folder.)
* You can move all of your Offline webpages to a Flash
drive or burn onto
a CD for storage.
*Download and save any United Streaming videos, movies, powerpoints,
etc...in an
application such as
Powerpoint/Excel/Word
*Periodically backup your files to a Flash drive or portable hard
drive.
*Run your virus protection software updates and complete routine
maintenance often.
(Routine
maintenance includes cleaning out internet temp files/cookies/history and
running a Disk Defragmenter from the System
Tools of your computer)
Encourage
students to regularly backup their work and complete routine maintenance.
